Recognition and Transfer of Credit

Changes to the "Guidelines Recognition and Transfer of Credits" as of fall semester 2024:

  1. From August 1, 2024, all recognizable credits from non-Swiss universities will be recognized and credited with "passed". Students who submit a request for recognition (Anerkennungsgesuch) between August 1, 2024 and October 31, 2024 can choose whether the modules to be recognized should be recognized with a grade or with "passed". The decisive factor is the time of receipt of the request for recognition.
  2. As of November 1, 2024, The recognition of the Bachelor’s module International Public Law/European Law module is excluded if it was completed as part of a Summer or Winter School. The recognition of Summer/Winter Schools as International Law/European Law, which were successfully completed remains possible if the request for recognition will be submitted by the October 31, 2024. The decisive factor is the time of the receipt of the request for recognition.
  3. From August 1, 2024, three adjustments to the recognition of legal internships will apply:
  • A newly defined and lowered minimum working hours requirement (at least 90 working hours within a maximum of six months)
  • Reduced options regarding the scope of ECTS credits that can be recognized (internships can only be recognized to the extent of 3 or 6 ECTS)
  • The requirement of a predominantly legal content of the internship performance
  • Between August 1, 2024 and October 31, 2024, applicants can choose whether the recognition of an internship should be carried out according to the old or new recognition rules. The decisive factor is the time of receipt of the request for recognition.

General Information

Coursework completed at other universities or faculties or the School for Transdisciplinary Studies at UZH or in the context of legal internships may be recognized for the studies at the Faculty of Law of the University of Zurich (RWF UZH) . Only coursework which counts towards a degree of the Faculty of Law of the University of Zurich (RWF UZH) may be recognized.

In principle, only coursework that is not more than ten years old (cf. § 44 para. 1 Program Regulation of RWF UZH, StudO RWF) can be considered for transfer of credit.

Coursework completed at another university may be transferred to the Bachelor's degree to the extent of a maximum of 90 ECTS credits (§ 50 para. 1 Framework Ordinance, RVO RWF) resp. to the extent of a maximum of 45 ECTS credits to the Master's degree (§ 51 para. 1 RVO RWF).

Coursework which is equivalent to a module already successfully completed at RWF UZH cannot be recognized (section 4 para. 4 Guidelines Recognition, RLA).

If a law module counted towards the degree at another faculty, it can only be transferred to the degree at RWF UZH if it is equivalent to a compulsory module at RWF UZH. For elective and core elective modules, a transfer of credit is not possible.

Term papers, Bachelor’s or Master’s theses completed at another university are not recognized.

For the Master of Law UZH International and Comparative Law (MLaw UZH ICL), only coursework and internships in English can be recognized.
