PhD BmEL

Since the autumn semester 2009, the University of Zurich has been offering the PhD programme "Biomedical Ethics and Law" (PhD BmEL), which is unique in Switzerland.

Doctoral students can complete their doctorate at either the Faculty of Law or the Faculty of Medicine and accordingly complete the Law Track with a focus on law or the Medical Track with a focus on biomedical ethics. The Law Track of the PhD BmEL is aimed at particularly qualified lawyers who want to focus both theoretically and practically on the competences required for academic work in the field of national and international medical law, health law and bioethics in research and teaching.

The Law Track usually lasts three years. It includes the preparation of a dissertation and modules worth at least 30 credit points.
