Guest seminar: How does insurance work in practice

Insurance in times of climate change

Prof. Karel Van Hulle from KU Leuven will hold a guest seminar over the span of 4 afternoons at UZH.

The course will enable students to understand how insurance undertakings need to organise their business in order to meet legal requirements and to be successful in today’s complex environment; the following subjects will be discussed:

  • Insurance business model: financial and solvency requirements
  • Insurance and policyholders: market conduct and consumer protection
  • Insurance and traditional risk: capital requirements and risk management
  • Insurance and emerging risks: the example of climate change

No prior knowledge of insurance law is required; the course is aimed at any Master's students with an interest in insurance, financial law, and company law.

After the course, students will be required to produce an essay in order to achieve 3 ECTS credits.
