Each year, the University of Zurich (chairs Heiss and Loacker) sends a team to the Willem C. Vis (East) International Commercial Arbitration Moot, an annual international competition for law students. In 2023/24, 373 universities participated in Vienna.

The Willem C. Vis Moot is a simulated arbitration procedure consisting of written submissions and oral hearings. The competition starts at the beginning of October with the publication of the case on the Vis Moot website. The team then draft a memorandum for claimant and respondent. The oral final rounds before fictitious arbitral tribunals take place in Vienna and Hong Kong in the weeks before Easter. The arbitral tribunals consist of experienced professors and lawyers from a wide range of backgrounds. In terms of substance, the case concerns the Vienna Convention (CISG), and in terms of procedure, international arbitration. The written submissions and the pleadings must both be made in English.

The UZH team regularly achieves major successes. In the 2023/24 round, for example, the team achieved 1^st place worldwide three times for its written submissions.

• Unique opportunity to learn about the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG) as well as international arbitration in a practice-oriented manner
• Supervision and support by four experienced coaches, a language coach and the moot court assistant
• Participation in test hearings at renowned law firms in Zurich and domestic and international pre-moots
• Travel costs (flights and accommodation) are covered by sponsors (at most – small – contribution to expenses by the team)

The Moot Court comprises a total of 18 ECTS credits. For Master students, it can be recognized either as an elective module (18 ECTS credits) or as a Master’s thesis (12 ECTS credits) and elective module (6 ECTS credits). You must already be enrolled in the Master's degree at the time of application if you intend to have the moot court recognized as Master’s thesis.

For Bachelor students who have already achieved 150 ECTS, only a recognition as Master elective module (18 ECTS) is possible. Another recognition in the Bachelor program is not possible.

This list does not guarantee that the desired recognition is possible. The recognition request will be checked individually after admission to the team.
